IMDP Competency Framework
In order to help countries improve the management of health programmes, The Union has designed a series of courses that address challenges faced by national programme managers and healthcare administrators in limited-resource settings. The courses focus on developing essential skills crucial for managing international healthcare programmes such as project management, budget development and administration, developing successful leadership techniques, and managing human resources. Each of the five courses is part of an entire management-educational process that follows a natural progression in management training.
The International Management Development Programme (IMDP) helps develop global leaders by identifying specific competencies that are critical to health care workers. Competencies are segmented as per The Union’s Competency Framework and taught in all our courses. All Union Courses focus on development of three skills:
- Technical Skills
- Managerial Skills
- Functional Skills
Each of the above skills requires specific competencies that need to be developed. The IMDP helps develop competencies by focusing on managerial and functional skills where participants are taught new directions in programme management. IMDP courses actively involve participants through practical, intensive, and well-planned learning experiences which include assessments, case studies, simulations, workshops, and sharing of best practices. The main objective is to build competencies so that the health care worker makes a personal difference to something that matters. This in turn makes a difference to the lives of the patients, their self-development, and to effective programme management.
The IMDP builds on participants' existing knowledge through sharing best practices and current information in the area of public health and management. Specific skills are taught that can be applied by the participants, and helps build competency by ensuring that the skills learned can be applied in their countries. Action plans and individualised coaching ensure an immediate and direct impact.
The following Competency Framework segments various competencies as per the skills required for effective programme management. IMDP courses addresses all the competencies mentioned in this framework.
